Decontamination & Mechanical Cleaning

Once transported to the CSSD dirty zone, instruments undergo rigorous mechanical cleaning.
Sorting: Instruments are completely opened and disassembled.Ultrasonic Cleaners: Devices with hinges, box locks, or serrations are placed in ultrasonic baths. This process relies on cavitation—microscopic sound waves that create tiny bubbles that implode, blasting debris out of hard-to-reach crevices.
Washer-Disinfectors: Instruments go through automated cycles of pre-wash, chemical wash, rinse, and thermal disinfection.Clean instruments enter the preparation and packaging cleanroom. Technicians inspect every piece under magnification:Functionality: Scissors must cut cleanly through testing material without snagging; forceps must align perfectly at the tips.Insulation Testing: Laparoscopic shafts are scanned using high-voltage insulation testers to locate microscopic cracks that could cause accidental internal electrical burns during surgery.Chemical Indicators: An internal chemical indicator is placed inside each instrument tray to verify that sterilizing agents successfully penetrate the center of the pack.
